George Russin’s precocious sense of creativity was noticed early on
in his New York City childhood, born to a piano-playing family. He
went the High School of Music and Art and pursued both fields of
study. While he was awarded the St. Gaudens Medal for Art plus a
scholarship to Pratt Institute, it was music that spoke to him more
loudly as a teenager. He
joined a jazz band at 16 years old as a  “self
taught tenor sax player," working with musicians like Fats Waller,
Benny Goodman, Lena Horne and Louis Armstrong. He had been quoted
as  saying,
“I loved doing the musical scenes. I lived for whatever had
to do with women, music and art...."
After army service in World War II, fine art replaced music as
Russin's focal interest. He took advantage of his Pratt scholarship
and later received the Bronze Medal for achievement.  He continued his
studies at the independent art school Art Students League of New York
where he began working with a palette knife and doing stain glass “to
develop a vibrant, mosaic-like style that was eventually exhibited at some
of New York’s top galleries in the 80’s.” Of this part of his life, Russin said:
“It was the same kind of concentration and joy as when I played the sax.”
bio information from the Arnot Gallery, New York"His semi-abstract manner is rooted in realism. A shattering of the surface into many small planes does not disturb the essential contours. He hasworked out a personal means of expression, and the planes are replaced by dabs of color to give a flickering vibrant quality."
