This is a vintage (serial number 452466) Olds Geyer Wrap Double French Horn. This instrument has what is known as a "Geyer wrap" meaning that unlike a Kruspe wrap horn the change valve is located on the far side of the horn from the player. This gives the horn a slightly lighter, crisper feel. This horn is also made from solid nickel silver (like a Holton 179 or a Conn 8D) rather than the more common yellow brass. The horn plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings, as well as light scratching throughout the instrument. There is also a slight rimple in the bell near the main bell brace, and a small brazed repair. The bell engraving reads: “F.E. OLDS & SON/ FULLERTON/ CALIF.” The minor defects are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition.How the horn plays: Big, full sound. The tone is sweet and smooth. The horn is responsive, resonant and free-blowing. The Bb and F side timbres match well once intonated. The low and high registers speak very well and are secure to play in.
