Up for sale, a 1960's Newcomb H-25 tube PA and guitar amp head in excellent condition and perfect working order. Based in Los Angeles from the '50s to the early 1980s, Newcomb specialized in making compact, all tube Public Address systems for schools and offices, with this particular unit having spent the majority of its life in a school in Portland, Oregon as evidenced by the light engraving on the left side edge (visible in photo #8). A 25 watt affair, this H-25 sports dual 6L6 power tubes, a 5U4G rectifier tube, and several octal preamp tubes including three metal-can 6SF5 hi-mu triodes, a 6SN7 dual triode, and a 6S17 pentode, with a point-to-point-wired circuit that uses no boards or terminal strips.Though originally intended as a PA, like many of the early tube amps of the era, it works incredibly well when repurposed as a guitar amplifier using the included 1/4" to XLR adaptor, with three inputs on the rear panel along with a 1/4" speaker output controlled by a jumper style impedance selector, allowing for 4, 8, or 16 ohm operation. This makes using the head with a variety of speaker cab options a breeze! Channels 1 and 2 deliver a wonderfully responsive clean tone, with that punchy and dynamic quality not unlike many of the early octal preamp based Fender tweed circuits. The amp develops a similar fuzzy top end response and toothy midrange bite when cranked into overdrive on the first two inputs, while channel three is much lower in gain allowing your tone to stay cleaner a little higher up the volume dial. The front panel sports independent volume controls for each input, as well as a simple but effective EQ tone stack, with a Treble and Bass knob allowing you to tailor the tonal response to your guitar.
The vented metal enclosure sports an almost grey silver finish, with chrome side handle, black control plate, dual pilot lights, and cream knobs, for a decidedly vintage hi-fi look that exudes classic cool. Cosmetically, there are a handful of nicks in the finish along the surface of the head, along with the aforementioned engraving, but this unit is otherwise in fantastic shape, and is in wonderful structural and functional shape, especially for being nearly six decades into its life. The power cable sports and upgraded three-prong power cable too. These Newcomb PA heads are wonderful guitar amp conversions that look as great as they sound, and are truly one of the last real bargains in the hand-wired vintage tube amplifier world! Please check out our shop "Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar" on the web, and feel free to call us directly with any questions at 206.399.8518.
Shipping in the continental USA will be by FedEx Ground and will be $60, fully insured. We use double thick boxes, 1" foam and industrial 1/2" bubble wrap to assure that your amp arrives safely.
