INTERESTING 1850's ENGLISH CONCERTINA SQUEEZEBOX ACCORDION with BOX 48 BUTTON Presented is an interesting old accordion or concertina. We believe this is an English piece. This is not our field so we aren't sure of much else about the piece. The end pieces are made from an attractive dark wood, with carved openwork designs circling the keyboard. Each end has a leather strap to slip your hand through, but both straps have detached on one side. It does make sound when squeezed but I have no idea if the keys work as they should. The hexagonal box is probably original to the piece, and has a hook latch on the front so it can be closed securely. There is a brass handle affixed to the top of the lid, and a panel on the lid has been replaced. The interior is lined with red velvet. This squeezebox could definitely use some TLC, but it seems to be a high quality instrument to my admittedly untrained eye. Sold as is. A kind ebay member has told us the following information regarding this concertina: "Your concertina was made by "Louis Lachenal, Patent Concterina Manufacurer" as is apparent from the type of levers that it has. With serial number 5236, it is one of the very earliest Lachenal concertinas, having been made in the late 1850s. The majority from that period had brass reeds, but yours has steel reeds. Very interesting." Another kind ebay member has shared their expertise with us as well. "This is by the unknown maker who people call Tidder, as he was someone who made concertinas and whose work is never marked. You can always tell them as they have ink stamped numbers between 0000 and 5000+. Lachenals have branded ,impressed numbers and would have an internal paper label on the back of the reedpan. This one looks like a Tidder-is marked in the way that only Tidder used and would be made in the 1880-90 period when steel reeds were common." Please make your own judgments on this piece; as we said above we are not specialists with this kind of item. Good luck and bid with confidence. For the American Bidder
