The Yamaha Manu Katché Signature snare drum has been discontinued for some years now, but it still is a very desirable product that people search in the second-hand market. It is considered one of the best snare drums Yamaha has ever built.
We’ve heard its sound in several very well known albums in which Manu Katché has played (Sting, for example), and Katché himself states that he uses it in all kinds of situations. Even a friend who is a sound engineer asked him once if he didn’t have any other snare drum, and Manu answered: “Nope”. In fact, the word that defines this snare drum is “versatility”. It has a very fast, responsive cool sound with a fast decay. The Yamaha Manu Katché Signature snare drum is a very “easy” and adjustable instrument, it adapts well to different tunings and styles. It’s one of those products that have “everything” on them. But there’s a problem: it is nothing more than an almost exact copy of a Ludwig Black Beauty. Manu Katché himself has stated that he is a great fan of the Black Beauties and his design is identical. In fact, the one he plays has its hoop from an actual Ludwig. According to him, the only difference between both is that the Manu Katché Signature snare drum rings more than the Black Beauty and has a full, bigger sound. There’s no doubt that the Yamaha Manu Katché Signature snare drum is a truly great instrument that has made an impact, but depending on the price -which is still high even for the second-hand market-, maybe I would purchase a Black Beauty without a second thought. If it turns that I have to choose between the two at the same price, I would pick the one that sounds better to me, although they are really similar. The Yamaha Manu Katché Signature snare drum comes in two versions: 14″ x 5,5″ and 14″ x 6,5″. Both shells are made of brass 1.2 mm. thick and have an aluminum Die-Cast hoop on the snare side and a zinc Die-Cast hoop on the batter side. It comes with 10 one-piece lugs and a 20-strands short-type hi-carbon steel snare.
