Up for sale, a 1972 Gibson SG Deluxe in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This vintage SG is particularly clean and complete with a stock Cherry finish that has faded moderately on the top to a deep shade of Walnut and is still vibrant and glossy. The guitar is stocked with a pair of original patent sticker T Top humbuckers that have great power and richness. Designed as an upgrade version of the SG and rolled out early in the Norlin era, the Deluxe's most notable feature that differentiates it from an SG Standard is a stock Gibson-branded Bigsby B5 vibrato. Along with a Les Paul-esque pickguard and top mounted control plate, the Deluxe is certainly unique, and this is one of the nicest examples currently on the market.Weighing in at 7lbs, this SG is remarkably light and has a clear acoustic tone that's warm and wooly, as you'd expect from a set-neck, solid mahogany instrument. The original T Top humbuckers are some of the last to feature the patent stickers on the baseplates, and have a detailed tone that has a surprising amount of clarity and twang in the top end, while still delivering a full low end and plenty of punch. The neck pickup is particularly round and thick, perfect for fattening up your favorite fuzz pedal or pushing a low wattage tube amp into smooth tube saturation. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with 10-46 strings, this SG features comfortable action and solid intonation. The three-piece mahogany neck has a C shaped profile which is fairly slender at the nut and gains notable depth as you move up the fretboard, filling out to a shape that has full "baseball bat" chunk by the time you reach the 9th fret and beyond. This profile is very comfortable for quick lead lines and chord work, and the rosewood fretboard boasts small block inlays and original fretwire. The stock frets are of the wide/flat variety Gibson was using in this era, showing notable wear only beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, with lighter flattening of the crowns beneath the treble strings until roughly fret 8 and virtually no wear further up the board. The neck is straight, the truss rod is responsive, and the guitar plays cleanly in all registers. The nut measures 1 9/16" in width, and the original Schaller-made Gibson-branded chrome tuners are intact on the headstock with chrome tulip buttons. All of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots that date to the 6th week of 1972 and original tone caps. The original hardware is completely intact, including clean chrome pickup covers, stock patent # ABR-1 bridge, black witch hat knobs with chrome inserts, and the Gibson-branded Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. It's also notable that this bridge still has room to adjust lower and the break angle from the bridge to the Bigsby is ideal, two rarities on this model given the shallower neck angle. Suffice it to say that this is one of the nicest and most playable examples of this model we've ever had in the shop.Cosmetically, this guitar has been well cared for over the past 45 years, and the finish is still rich and vibrant. While much of the Cherry dye has faded from the lacquer on the top of the guitar, the back of the instrument has a bit more of the original Cherry color. There are a few small scratches and dings on the body, particularly concentrated near the rear strap button and on the edges of the body horns. There is also light buckle rash central to the back. The guitar has no cracks or repairs of any kind, and the nitro lacquer finish is 100% original with no touchups or overspray!
A modern hardshell case is included (not pictured).
