A very rare Monarch Banjo - more pictures belowStamped on the heel: J G Abbott & Co., Makers, London
" Monarch"A beautifully figured neck with double ebony centre line from top to toe and ebony to the heel.
Ebony fret board and headstock front both inlaid with Mother of Pearl.
Original Grover tuning pegs.
The neck goes right through the pot and is wedged in place with ebony blocks.The chrome of the pot and hoop is in great condition.
There are 22 tension hooks to tension the calf skin head.
The head is ink stamped to the reverse : Jos Rogers Jr, 1st Quality, warranted
The flange has what I believe are the earlier style cut outs.
Original Grover Presto tailpiece. Also has a good chrome arm rest.The back of the resonator is fabulously made up of 8 sections of finely figured timber with a central button.
The black ebonised edging to the resonator is worn in places.
There is a fine crack between one of the sections on the back of the resonator - see pictures.This is a very rare version of the Monarch.
From what I can gather Abbott had various grades of quality for all his banjo types.
I can only find one other Abbott Monarch similar to this which is
Every part of this banjo is of the highest quality.It appears to be in its original case.Please study the pictures carefully as they form a large part of the description - there are more below.Measures:
