Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Jazzmaster in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, with a vibrant Lake Placid Blue custom color finish and matching headstock. The premier, full scale length Fender Offset guitar of its day, this Jazzmaster was produced at the tail end of the Pre-CBS era, with clay dot inlay on the veneer Brazilian rosewood fretboard, the original mint green nitrate pickguard, and a transitional logo. This two-owner instrument is complete with its original hangtags and brown tolex case to round out this collector-grade example.Highly desirable by both collectors and players for reasons both tonal and aesthetic, this Jazzmaster delivers a pronounced and cutting acoustic tone that translates well through the early, hand-dated gray bobbin pickups. The pickups are well balanced and powerful, with the clarity and cut of your favorite Fender single coil, yet with a warmth and nuance that's unique to the Jazzmaster pickup design, with the original pickup windings extending all the way to the very edge of the bobbins. Whether you desire the sinewy snap of early surf recordings or the seminal attack of your favorite Elvis Costello or Sonic Youth records, it's hard to beat a real vintage Fender Jazzmaster. Weighing in at 8lbs 2oz, this guitar has plenty of sustain and punch, and when you authoritatively strike a chord, you can feel the whole instrument vibrate and jump. Professionally setup and dialed in to perfection here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar (where we specialize in Offset Fender guitars), this Jazzmaster is ready for the stage and studio with fresh 11-50 strings. The one-piece maple neck has a fairly slender feel down at the nut, and while the shoulders remain fairly slight, the depth of the profile does increase quite a bit as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard. The finish on the profile is still very glossy, showing only faint wear down to the bare wood along the the edges from frets 1-2, and the maple as quite a bit of prominent grain and light figuring as well (the most notable of which is on the back of the headstock). The Brazilian rosewood veneer fretboard has clay dot inlay and original fretwire that's in fantastic shape. The frets have been leveled and crowned in the guitar's lifetime, currently showing virtually no wear and having enough meat left for another recrown in the future. The fretboard retains its original 7 1/4" radius, and the stock nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the original single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are intact and turn smoothly with straight shafts and clean nickel gear housings that have only faint patina. The face of the headstock is quite clean as well, with an immaculate "Jazzmaster" transition logo, and white nitro lacquer to match the body. All of the electronics work as they should, with original pickups, untouched solder joints, and stock Stackpole pots that date to the 50th week of 1964. The original brass shielding plates are present in the body routes, as well as the stock cloth wire and aluminum shielding plate beneath the mint green pickguard. The most important date code is clean and present on the neck heel, noting a June, 1964 build date, and the bridge pickup bobbin is also pencil dated to 12/17/64.All of the stock hardware is present, including the gorgeous mint green pickguard and matching knobs and pickup covers, as well as the chrome bridge and vibrato tailpiece. The chrome plating on the bridge and tailpiece is in truly remarkable shape, and the vibrato works extremely well, responding like only a vintage spring can, with nuance and reliability that makes this unit stand out as one of Leo Fender's best designs. For quick flutters, surfy dives, and deeper warbles, few vibrato units can match this original Fender Jazzmaster unit! The factory Lake Placid Blue nitro lacquer finish is in fantastic shape, with the correct paint stick markings in the neck pocket and a glow under a blacklight that further verifies the finish's originality. There's barely any shrinkage of the pickguard and it sits flat on the body. There is faint vertical checking on the body and a light yellowing of the clear coat on the lacquer, adding a very faint green tinge to an otherwise very bold and rich blue. There are a few scattered nicks and finish chips around the body contours too, most notably on the lower bout treble side edge just south of the lead circuit controls. Targeted buckle rash on the back and some surface patina on the L prefix neck plate and bridge saddles round out the modest cosmetic wear on the guitar. Overall, it's a particularly clean example that will satisfy collectors and serious gigging musicians alike! The original brown tolex Fender hardshell case is included. The case is in excellent shape with clean leather ends and working latches. Additionally, the guitar comes with the original hangtag (with matching serial number), as well as the warranty card, mini catalog, original case key, allen wrench, and "ashtray" bridge cover.
