Here's a very cool Fender Deluxe from 1953. Wow, what stories this amp could tell! It is the 5B3 circuit with the 6SC7 octal preamp tubes, 5Y3 rectifier tube, and 6V6 power tubes. The amp was recovered and regrilled - obviously a long time ago judging from the covering design and cool textured grill cloth. Whoever did the work did an excellent job. Most tubes are vintage new-old-stock and were recently hand-selected by testing with TV7-D/U tube tester and listening in the amp itself. The 6SC7 tube is noted for being somewhat microphonic. I selected from about a dozen examples in my stock for tubes with the lowest possible microphonics and best tone. Original tube boxes for some of the tubes are included with the sale. The main electrolytic caps have been replaced with Spragues. Two resistors have also been replaced. A grounded 3 prong ac cable has been installed. Death cap has been removed. The originals parts are included, except for the original ac cable, which was crumbling. The indicator light was missing when I got the amp, so a newer one has been installed. It looks like the handle has been replaced, as well as a few screws and L brackets on the power transformer. Both back panels are missing. The original speaker, a Jenson P12Q dated the 50th week of 1952, has been painted green. There is also a bit of green paint inside the cabinet. I guess a previous owner wanted a "greenback"? The speaker itself has a couple of repairs but works. It's worn-sounding, but that's not unusual for something that is about 65 years old. Since the amp has been modified, I recommend upgrading the speaker and keeping the original safely stored. That said, the amp sounds very good with that classic tweed Deluxe tone. At mid volumes, it has that rich full tone, and higher on the dial it gets nasty rather quickly. If you are looking for a REAL tweed Deluxe that won't break the bank, this would be a great option. Yes, it has lost its original tweed, which is unfortunate, but the recovering is cool and old-looking. A fully original example is $2000-3000. A 50's Fender doesn't surface very often in this price range, so grab it while you can!
