From the Sound Skulptor website. The MP573 is a two stage, single ended class A preamp, based on the design that was originally used in the Neve 1290/1073 modules, that has been adapted to the '500' format of API.The sound of the MP573, like its model is full, silky, detailed and musical, slightly larger than life, very complimentary to a digital recording environment. The MP573 is great on vocals, acoustic instruments and generally all close miked sources that need to be pushed forward in the mix.Sound on Sound Review: About the MP573If you have any thoughts on buying a classic British preamp (I.e. a Neve or similar) then look no further than the Soundskulptor MP573, the stunning 500-Series preamp designed by Jean-Pierre Kuhn in France. You will simply be pushed to find a better sounding 500 series preamp at this price that will get you as close to the nuance and character that is associated with the "British" sound. This preamp is as close to a Neve as it gets (for half the price). Its larger than life sound (featuring the huge Carnhill transformer) will deliver you a massive 70DB of gain. Sounds incredible on vocals. Sounds incredible on everything basically!FeaturesSingle ended class A designCarnhill/St. Ives transformers on input and output0 to 70 dB of gainSwitchable first stageThe output stage is biased in a rich Class A with 70mA of idle currentFet DI input, relay switched, the signal passes through the input transformerSignal/Clip LED monitors clipping in both stages24V supply built from the +/-16V with a linear regulatorGolden contacts on relays and switchesJumper selectable input impedance : 300-1200 ohms.High quality Grayhill gain switchNicely damped quality conductive plastic potentiometerTantalum capacitors in the audio path (as in original)
High grade 105°C low ESR electrolytic capacitorsWIMA film capacitorsAfter building and installing a pair of these in the big control room of my 3 room recording facility in Portland Ore. they became so popular with the other engineers and free lancers that racking them in a portable lunchbox so they could be used in the other control rooms was insufficient and I wound up having to equip the other rooms with their own pairs.I found these compared very favorably with the BAE1073 and Original 1272 units in the big room at a fraction of the price.
I was extremely impressed with the quality of the design and components used so I decided to add them to the selection of 500 modules that I like to build in my free time to help pay for the ones I keep. I have spent the last 20 years using, repairing and modifying all manner of recording equipment. All of my modules are built to exacting specs then thoroughly tested before being packed up for sale.
