How about I tell you a story… Back when I was a music major at Portland State University in the late 70’s, there were several students who had come to school from about an hour south (Salem, Oregon). These brass players spoke of a repairman in the basement of Will’s Music (long since closed) who was modifying player’s trumpets (mostly Bach) with tunable bells and interchangeable lead-pipes. This cat had all the working pros and even the Oregon Symphony guys flocking to him for these “mods.” David Monette was his name. Flash forward a couple years (early 80’s) and Dave goes off to the mid-west to make himself a household name in the trumpet world. The workmanship improves as does his reputation. Now his horns fetch thousands, and “copies” of his designs and work are everywhere. This particular B-flat Bach Strad trumpet #171640 was consigned with us. The customer bought it several years ago, and quit playing trumpet. When he brought it in I recognized it as something Dave probably did in Indiana or Chicago in the mid 80’s. The tuning bell is done much better (cleaner) than some of his earlier Salem work. The horn plays great, good compression and slots to double G really well. The bell (raw brass) is an Elkhart model #37. The horn may even have been one of Dave’s own horns at some point since the serial number dates it to the late 1970’s. Plating on the body is 60-70%, worn around the contact points and bell setup. The lead-pipe to valve cluster brace is custom (not lead-pipe to bell), as is the front lead-pipe to bell brace. This one actually doesn’t solder to either part, instead being clamped to provide protection against undue bell movement in the case. I feel this provides more of a free ringing (speaking) bell. The tunable bell is expertly installed, no undue solder splashed around, nice and clean. If I were going to keep this I would have the remaining plating stripped and leave it raw brass throughout. The lead-pipe is Dave’s own creation. Marked with his name on the collar and the numbers M221 and OS36 stamped on the receiver. There’s a standard Bach (square) tuning slide with an Amato water key (no 3rd slide water key). Works pretty well with my 5C, however back in my PSU days Dave and I both played Schilke mouthpieces (he’d probably never admit that now), so I’m not sure what the numbers designate, or what mouthpiece the pipe was designed to accommodate. The trumpet will be shipped to you in the Yamaha case pictured, no mouthpiece. I arrived at my asking price by watching to see what some similar “Monette-Bach” hybrids have sold for. Obviously he’s not making these anymore so aside from getting an awesome axe, there’s a collector’s value built in too. Check the photos, ask many questions and submit offers if you wish. I will de-grease it and put it through the ultrasonic before shipping it out (shipping and insurance at my expense). If you are a buyer from out of the country I will only ship to Paypal approved continental USA addresses. So plan to have a friend of yours receive it and forward it to you (I won’t hassle with customs and such). No returns unless the description is not correct. You must check all the photos, and ask your questions before buying to avoid any problems later. I’m pretty sure you won’t be disappointed with this trumpet. Thanks for looking!
