This is a vintage (serial number 600438) King model 1159 Double French Horn. This instrument is in good playing condition and plays well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. This horn has had its original bell upgraded to screw bell with standard Alexander bell rings. As for the aesthetic condition of the instrument, there are a few dings and pings, as well as some scratching and pitting in isolated areas throughout the horn. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. The bell engraving reads: “KING/ MUSICAL/ INSTRUMENTS/ USA” The leadpipe has “1159” stamped onto the mouthpiece receiver. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore, fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a worn screw-bell hardshell briefcase style case and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays: Bright, lively and full sound. The horn is fairly snappy and quick, but it is also capable of playing melodically and smooth. The horn is responsive and free-blowing. The Bb side timbre is slightly brighter than the F side. The horn has a good dynamic range with an edgy, full fortissimo and a mellow, sweet pianissimo. The low and high registers speak well.
