This is a vintage (serial number 530554) Holton H-478 Double French Horn. This is a yellow brass Kruspe wrap Bb/F full double french horn. The Holton 478 is a 378 that has been upgraded to a screw-bell configuration. This horn has had its original bell upgraded to screw bell with standard Alexander bell rings. This horn is in good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with very good compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings, and some light scratching and pitting throughout the horn. The bell engraving is partially obscured by the bell ring, but “Holton” is still visible just above the ring. The leadpipe has “H378” stamped on the mouthpiece receiver. The imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop, and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn briefcase style screw bell hardshell case, and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays: Full, warm sound. The tone is dark and smooth. The Bb and F side timbres match well. The horn has a good dynamic range, capable of a soft pianissimo without breaking up and an edgy fortissimo without blatting. The low and high registers speak well. All horns are located at Silver & Brass Music Shop710 N. Curry St. Carson City, NV89703(775) 301-6289
