Up for sale, a 1981 Fender Lead II in 100% original condition and in good working order, acquired from the original owner and complete with the original Fender case. Introduced at the tail end of the CBS era, the Lead II was essentially a reimagined version of the famous Mustang, with slick black on black cosmetics and X-1 single coil pickups which were also found in the Dan Smith model Strats. Weighing 7lbs 10oz, this is a lightweight and great playing Fender, with the same out of phase switching as a Mustang, but with toggles that are ideally placed out of the pick path! Professionally setup and currently strung with 10-46 strings, this Lead II is a great value with classic Fender single coil twang and snap. The maple neck has a comfortable chunky C profile that stays fairly consistent in depth as you move up the fretboard. There's a bit of faint figuring in the maple on the profile too, and the neck plays very comfortably with a smooth gloss finish and round shoulders. The stock fretwire is in great shape and retains its full, original height, playing cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. There are only a couple extremely light spots of fretwear in the first position beneath the D, G, and B strings, and virtually no wear beyond fret 5. On the headstock, the original Schaller-made Fender "F" chrome tuning machines are intact, and the Fender Lead II logo is clean and present. All of the electronics work as they should, with strong and balanced output from the two single coils. The controls consist of master volume and tone knobs, with a three-way pickup selector toggle switch and two way phase switch that gives a fantastic, thinned out snappy tone when both pickups are engaged. The wiring harness is untouched, with pots that date back to the 17th week of 1980, while the original sticker in the pickup cavity route conclusively dates this guitar to 1981.The original gloss black nitro lacquer finish is very clean, with only one tiny finish chip adjacent to the rear strap button, and very faint buckle rash in the clear coat on the back of the body. There is also light wear on the guard in the pick path, and a couple tiny nicks around the edges of the contoured body. This is a well cared for one-owner example of a briefly produced Fender model, with all the tonal range and charm of a Mustang and more intuitive switching options! The original black tolex Fender hardshell case is included. This case has the raised Fender logo on the exterior, clean black leather ends, and even the small strap inside the case to secure the guitar's neck.
