This is a 1962 Elkhart Conn 8DS double french horn (serial number 959543). The engraving reads "C G Conn LTD Elkhart IND USA.", and the leadpipe has "8D stamped on the receiver. This is what is known as a "pre-letter" Elkhart 8D, since there is no letter preceding the serial number on the horn. These horns are from the earlier era of the Elkhart factory, and are generally agreed to be of superior quality than any of the the later horns that Conn has made. The 8D is Conn's symphony double horn, and is constructed from solid nickel silver. The horn plays very well. The valves move well with good compression, and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings throughout the horn, as well as some scratching and light pitting. This horn also features a screw-bell configuration, so the bell is detachable for easy storage. The bell screw has standard Alexander threads, so the bell is interchangeable with many bells available on the market should the player ever wish to try out different bells. All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wished for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a ProTec  “Meister Hans Hoyer” backpack style screw-bell case and mouthpiece in good condition. How this horn plays: Full, warm and bright sound. The tone is milky, smooth and colorful. The horn is responsive and free-blowing. The horn has an excellent dynamic range. The low and high registers speak well and are feel secure. The Bb and F side timbres match well.
