Dave Carter was shopping for a guitar in an upscale acoustic shop in Portland, Oregon. He tried a jumbo Taylor. He tried a Collings. He tried a Lowden. He couldn't decide. In between guitars, he picked up this Bart Reiter banjo and started picking at it just to clear his sonic palette a bit. Didn't mean anything by it. Couldn't afford it. Didn't even know how to play it, really. Just kind of liked the way it felt and sang back to him. The salesman watched as Dave tried guitar after guitar and kept coming back to the banjo. Unbeknownst to the salesman, Dave had settled on the Taylor at this point and was playing the banjo for fun. He had no intention of buying it. But the salesman misread the situation -- or maybe he read it right, given the way things turned out. Buckling under no pressure whatsoever, he marched over and interrupted Dave in his banjo reverie. "Okay! Fine!" he said. "I'll throw the banjo in for ___ bucks!" Dave laughed and looked at the sticker price. The salesman was offering a huge discount. The Taylor was going to set him back quite a bit but this banjo had some magic in it and seemed destined for his hands. He set the banjo in the case and said, "Deal."Dave always told his audiences that the banjo sounded like "the click and clack of old bones." He played it fingerstyle, in the same way he played guitar, tapping into the primal spirit of the instrument, something archetypal. And the songs he performed or recorded with banjo seem to have been charmed: "Gentle Arms of Eden" has become something of an eco-spirituality anthem and is easily his most popular cover. The fanciful "The River, Where She Sleeps" and "When I Go," a shamanic meditation he wrote for his dying mother, won Kerrville New Folk and other national songwriting contests in 1998; "When I Go" was also recorded in 2012 by Judy Collins and Willie Nelson. "Hey Conductor" was a favorite on the Joan Baez tour when she took Dave and his duo partner, Tracy Grammer, out as her featured artists and bandmates in the spring of 2002. Following Dave's death in July, 2002, songwriter Tracy Grammer purchased the banjo from Dave's estate, took a few lessons, and played the instrument on two different recordings to honor the memory of her late partner. Benefit:- 10% of proceeds will go to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, one of the duo's favorite charities.Audition the Instrument:The instrument is located in Greenfield, MA for anyone who wishes to audition it. Please be in touch.
