1961 F. E. OLDS & SON "OPERA PREMIER" MODEL O-12 - LARGE BORE (.468") PROFESSIONAL Bb TRUMPET WITH A SOLID NICKEL BELL AND LEAD PIPE IN NEAR MINT CONDITION
I have been playing horns for 60 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, and building custom horns for 49. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so. All my horns are gig ready...cleaned, valves adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary. PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED For your consideration, here is a 56 year old, early issue, professional grade Olds Opera Premier Model that was one of the first trumpets I acquired for my collection way back in 1969, and has been the representative example of an Opera Premier Model. In the beginning years of production, the Opera Premier had a solid nickel bell and lead pipe. Sometime in the mid 1960's they were replaced with a brass bell and lead pipe that IMHO dramatically altered the tone...and not in a good way! In 1960 Foster Reynolds passed away, and then Don Agard and Zig Kanstul were given the reins to Olds production...the 60's were the pinnacle years of some of the best playing horns to ever come out of Olds under the guidance of these two gentlemen (author's note: Zig passed away last November and will be sorely missed). The Opera was the penultimate model under the top-of-the-line Mendez, and IMHO it is one of the finest trumpets Olds ever produced (not to mention the fact that it is the only large bore model ever built). The Opera Model produces a HUGE, FAT and somewhat dark tone that is unlike any other trumpet I have played. The nickel bell is a bit edgy, but that makes it an incredible jazz horn, and it is more than capable of playing any music style with superb results.
From the Olds Central website 1962 catalog:
Note: $345. in 1961 is equal to $2,802. in 2017 dollars when adjusted for inflation.
This Opera Premier Model is a medium lightweight 2 lb. - 4.8 oz trumpet that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue. The trumpet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled...its sound is huge, bold, fat, centered and focused. It is a free and open blowing horn with a rich, dark tone that produces a clean and sophisticated edge when pushed, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere. This horn has excellent intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant. The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation. Slots are superb. Responsive and flexible, the Opera Premier Model makes a great jazz horn, but excels when playing commercial, legit, classical styles, studio sessions, and even performs well in small combos.Mechanically, the trumpet is in awesome condition with lightning fast valves that are bright and shiny, and exhibit near factory spec compression as the horn has seen little use over the decades. Cosmetically, there are a few micro and pin point pings/ scratches on bell tube, and some very minor pitting on the 1st and 3rd valve casing nickel upper balusters that was caused by the acids contained within my perspiration and hand oils. Other than a few tiny mute ripples in the bell throat from over zealous "huff and stuffs" that are more felt than seen, the rest of the horn is flawless. Over time, the original lacquer became severely deteriorated, so I stripped it, lightly polished the horn, and then applied a new coat of clear lacquer so as to provide a maintenance free finish. The M.O.P. insert in the 2nd valve slide pull button cracked, so I replaced it with a sterling silver mounted earring in the form of a Zia (Native American sun symbol and state symbol of Arizona) comprised of milky quartz, turquoise, onyx, and coral. The earring fit perfectly into the pull button pocket and adds a unique touch to the horn.
Except for the aforementioned minor blemishes, the trumpet is in superb condition. I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises". So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself. Finish - Polished yellow brass and nickel silver with a new coat of clear lacquer.
Serial # - 383XXX
Bore Size - .468" large bore
Features - One-piece 4.75" solid nickel bell and lead pipe; solid nickel silver main braces, upper casing balusters, outer slide tubes, and tuning slide crook; 1st valve slide with M.O.P. trigger; 3rd valve slide with adjustable ring.
Accessories - Original Olds wood shelled, leather covered, double handled professional case with blanket interior in good condition outside, and very good condition inside. All three latches work, with the two spring loaded latches still opening with authority. The exterior exhibits edge band wear of the leather and a few small areas where the skin of the leather has been scuffed down to the suede, but otherwise it is still quite nice. Also included is a brand new copy of a Bach Megatone 5C mouthpiece.

I am not an instrument dealer...just a musician and collector. However, bid with confidence as my feedback speaks for itself.
