SELLING OFF MY COLLECTION #5 I have decided to sell off my collection of almost a hundred stringed instruments, a collection acquired over the past 55+ years. While most of the instruments in my collection are older ones from European makers and shops, (and I will continue to list these each week), I have also acquired many modern and contemporary instruments along the way. Some of the finest of these newer instruments are being produced by a few makers in workshops in China. These makers are currently producing some of the most carefully-crafted and best-sounding instruments now available to advanced students and professional players. These are priced at a tremendous discount from the cost of vintage instruments from Europe and the Americas. Because China was until recently a main source of cheaply made assembly-line instruments, the pricing, even on these higher quality instruments being made by gifted individual makers, has been kept somewhat depressed. Recently, the trend has been changing as the best work by Chinese makers has for years now been gaining in reputation, winning top prizes in international competitions. Prices now are on the rise, but the value for money still makes a good Chinese violin an excellent investment. This particular violin is among the best sounding I have encountered coming from Chinese luthiers. The tone is strong and rounded, capable of many kinds of color. The sound is easily produced, and is even throughout the range, from the low G to the highest notes on the E. (And, as with any new violin, continued playing will only improve and burnish the tone over the years.) The choice of wood is a very beautiful -- nicely flamed maple for the back, sides and scroll, a medium-grained spruce for the top. The pegs, chinrest, and tailpiece are of ebony, and are finely sculpted. The gorgeous varnish reflects many layers of hue and the entire violin is subtly "antiqued". This is a full-sized 4/4 violin. The modeling and dimensions are basically those of a Golden Period Stradivarius violin. The body of this violin as well as the varnishing gives every indication of having been the work of one luthier, though the actual maker is unknown to me as there is no label inside or other indication of who this violinmaker was. The measurements of this violin are as follows: Body length = 14" Bottom bout = 8" Upper bout = 6 & 1/4" and the overall length is 23" I replaced the original strings with Pirastro Tonicas and adjusted the pegs so they operate easily and firmly. As I do with all the (playable) instruments I am selling on Ebay, I have personally "road-tested" this violin by playing it in actual music-making sessions with colleagues. I can assure the buyer that it is comfortably set up for ease of playing and has a rich tone that is well balanced throughout the range. My aim is to sell only those instruments that I would enjoying perform on myself. To ensure that this instrument will meet the buyer's expectations, tone quality I am extending the trial period from the Ebay standard period of 14 days to a FULL MONTH (30 days). The buyer may return the instrument within 30 days after purchase (so long as the buyer pays return postage and the instrument is returned in original and undamaged condition) Included with the violin is a brand new dark-green canvas-covered rectangular case, with hygrometer, instrument blanket, 3 covered compartments, a large music-carrying pocket, and straps for conversion to backpack carrying. The violin will also come with a good quality bow (possibly pernambuco?). The instrument will be securely packaged and shipped FREE anywhere within the United States.
