Description
Brand: Fairbanks Model: Electric
Banjo Type: 5-String Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
Number of Strings: 5 Era: 1891
Exact Year: 1891

According to online records, the date of manufacture for this banjo is 1894 (#13999 being the last of 800 made during that year). This banjo has been restored as a player rather than as a museum piece; eg. Five-Star Planet tuning pegs, neck restoration by Hanson and Crawford Stringed Instrument Repair through Donald Zepp in November 2008 including original nut adjustment, installation of a new dowel rod retaining the original serial number stamp and the A.C. Fairbanks & Co. Electric stamp (Grafted--see photos) neck reset, planed fingerboard, and new frets. A new modern horseshoe style neck brace was also installed by H & C and new inlays were installed by one of Gibson's craftsmen. The neck may be considered 'over-finished' by collector standards but as a player it is very smooth and playable.
The 12" pot is in untouched condition, showing some natural age with a few small dents in the metal cladding. The inside of the pot is untouched and shows natural patina and a few small, minor patches of surface corrosion on the scalloped tone ring. I have have not disassembled the pot to inspect or clean the tone ring components; only disassembled to the extent necessary to replace the head of a couple occasions. As far as I can determine, the banjo has 6 replacement hooks, 3 replacement nuts and one replaced shoe which match well in design and/or finish. The tailpiece is a period correct No Knot Cammed tailpiece (patent pending version) and the head is a thin semi-transparent goat skin which I mounted recently. The 27 1/4" scale banjo is presently strung with Nylgut strings (Red 4th-String) and sports a Moon bridge. There is no hard case for this banjo but it will be shipped in a Superior gig bag and packed appropriately for shipping.
