Gary Karr was having Lamay basses made for him and Gary's approach and tone were the gold standard of solo bass playing.I commissioned this bass directly from Larry in late 1971. His shop was in Lexington, Kentucky. . The bass was completed in 1973.In a response to a note from Larry Lamay’s granddaughter, Gary wrote the following... “Your grandfather was the first luthier I commissioned to build me a bass. Since then, I have commissioned twenty other makers, but until James Ham built me an instrument in 1995, no one surpassed the instruments made by Lawrence La May. He was a superb craftsman and one of the most interesting people I have ever known. I am deeply grateful to him for all that he taught me about both basses and bows. He was one of the giants in the world of bass and bows.” Gary KarrThe bass is 40+ years old and is a prime example of this GREAT luthiers work, in very good, almost pristine condition. This maker is an icon in American bass building, recgnized as a GREAT MAKER by THE GREATEST PLAYERS. The tone of this instrument is exceptional, the woods magnificent and Larry craft makes this a unique instrument. There are only minor cosmetic fixes that can be done. Certainly setup according to your needs may be necessary. However, the bass has adjusters and has been used for chamber, solo and jazz playing. It is ready to play. No cracks. Healthy with a magnificent tone.BUY IT NOW PRICE INCLUDES a David Gage fiberglass shipping case and a black Mooridian padded cover and FREE SHIPPING in the continental United States.
