Up for sale, a 1984 Gibson ES-335 Dot semi-hollowbody electric guitar in exceptional condition and perfect working order. The ES-335 Dot represents Gibson's first honest attempt at recreating the magic of the early dot neck ES-335, and this clean example features a tobacco sunburst gloss nitro lacquer finish, nickel hardware, and traditional 1 11/16" nut width. Used only on 335s for a brief period in the '80s, this guitar boasts the original Tim Shaw PAF style humbuckers, which were Gibsons first and arguably most successful bid at recreating the richness, clarity, and harmonic content of Gibson's golden era humbucker. Strummed acoustically, this ES-335 has the classic low-mid warmth and smooth tonal qualities which have become a hallmark of the classic ES-335 sound, and the full, dynamic acoustic tone translates well through the pickups. The neck pickup has a detailed and round sound that pairs well with the bridge humbucker which provides plenty of kick, snarl and harmonic fullness, not to mention Gibson's classic near-endless sustain! Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this guitar weighs 8lbs 12oz and plays very comfortably with low action, solid intonation and fresh 10-46 strings. The one-piece mahogany neck has a comfortable medium C profile that borders on the slimmer side of things down at the nut, growing notably deeper as you move up the fretboard and filling out to "baseball bat" depth and roundness by the time you reach the 9th fret. The fretboard is a gorgeous, dark cut of rosewood, with pearloid dot inlays and a professional refret. The new fretwire matches the width of the original frets with a bit more height and crown, currently showing only the faintest wear on the crowns of the G and B strings from frets 1-4 and virtually no wear further up the neck. The truss rod is responsive in both directions, the neck has ideal relief, and the guitar plays cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. The headstock sports a pearloid inlaid Gibson logo and classic crown inlay, as well as a set of original Grover tuning machines that turn smoothly and hold pitch well.On the body, all of the original electronics work as they should, with the aforementioned Tim Shaw pickups wired to a three-way pickup selector and individual volume and tone pots for each pickup with black bell knobs. The bridge pickup reads at 7.17k ohms, and the neck is 7.23k (well within spec for Tim Shaws), and the solder joints on the pickup covers are untouched. The maple body has cream binding, a black four-ply pickguard, and nickel hardware that has just the right amount of patina to have vintage appeal. Cosmetically, this guitar is in remarkable condition, with a glossy nitro lacquer natural finish that shows only a touch of targeted buckle rash just south of the neck joint which is only in the lacquer and doesn't go through the finish. There are also a few tiny nicks in the binding adjacent to the rear strap button. The neck pickup cavity reveals the long neck tenon and the Tim Shaws have matching stamps on the baseplates. For a guitar that's 30+ years old, this is a very well cared for ES-335 and an extremely soulful instrument as well. The original black tolex Gibson hardshell case is included.
