Description
Brand: Emile A Ouchard Model: silver-mounted violin bow
Era: 1947 Country/Region of Manufacture: France

This auction is for most of an Emile A Ouchard violin bow, as pictured.   Description:  The round pernambuco stick is stamped "E A OUCHARD PARIS" on both sides of the butt. It is also stamped "2  47" under the frog, which I think means the bow was made in February, 1947.  It has a silver wire wrapping.  The original ebony frog is mounted with silver ferrule, rings, heel plate and underslide.  The pinned two-piece heel plate has a mitre joint at the corner.  The underslide is fastened with two screws.  The frog is mounted on the stick in the Hill style.   Condition:  The pearl slide of the frog is missing.  The pearl eye on the player's side of the frog has a piece missing, and the eye on the audience side has some perspiration-induced erosion.  The wood and the silver fittings of the frog are in excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, missing chips of wood or significant scratches.   The head of the stick broke off at some point and was replaced with a four inch long V graft.  Then the head of the graft broke off and was re-attached with a pin or screw.  The head of the graft broke off again and is now lost, leaving the pin (or screw) hole in what remains of the graft.  The stick was also coated with a thick over-varnish everywhere except under the frog.  The rest of the stick is otherwise  in good condition with no cracks or repairs and only minor wear at the corners of the butt, but in my opinion the stick has been so badly damaged that it is not worth repairing.   The adjuster button and screw are not original to the bow.  The button is a nickel-mounted German replacement.  The screw serves to keep the frog mounted securely on the stick.   This is not a playable bow.  I think its only value is in the frog, and I am selling it for parts only.  I have hung onto it for many years, hoping that I would be able to match it to a good E A Ouchard stick.  I have now decided that I am unlikely to find a stick for it so I have decided to try to sell it.  If you have a stick that needs a frog, here's your chance to get one.   Free shipping in the United States.
