Up for sale, a 1988 Rickenbacker 4001V63 owned and played by Chris Hillman of the Byrds. This unique customized vintage reissue Rickenbacker bass has been documented on the Rick Resource forum, and is unmistakable as one of two Rickenbacker 4001s owned by Hillman in the '90s.This bass began it's life as an early V63 reissue, and was subsequently refinished by Rick Resource forum member Don Adamek, "Rick12dr," who also worked on Hillmans matching Mapleglo 4001. Along with the sleek black nitro Jetglo finish, custom gold pickguards were fashioned for this bass and it was fitted with a new cocobolo fretboard. The horseshoe pickup currently installed in this bass (with the shoes removed at Hillman's request) actually came from Hillman's Mapleglo 4001, which was heard on the Byrds' 1990 boxed set. A small Byrds decal on the gold guard rounds things out, and all the aforementioned mods/upgrades occurred prior to Hillman owning the bass. The instrument remains in the exact condition it was in when Hillman owned it almost two decades ago!Tonally, this 4001 has the thump, midrange presence, and thick, detailed sound that defines the early Rickenbacker bass sound. The low end depth and roundness of this bass is largely attributed to the horseshoe pickup, with incredible sustain thanks to the neck through body design. At 9lbs on the dot, this bass balances well on a strap and is fairly easy on the back. Currently strung with a set of high tension flatwound strings, this is a particularly great sounding 4001V63 which has been professionally setup and intonated here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar.The neck has a chunky D shaped neck profile with generous shoulders and a lightly oiled (but not lacquered) fingerboard for players who prefer a less glossy feel. The bass features slender vintage-style fretwire which is in exceptional condition with well rounded crowns and no notable wear. The headstock features the iconic Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover as well as the original Schaller-made Rickenbacker chrome tuners. All of the electronics work as they should and the chrome shines like new, including the Rick-o-Sound jack plate with "G1" prefix serial number that dates the bass to '88. The Jetglo nitro lacquer finish is polished to a high gloss sheen, showing only a couple extremely faint finish scuffs. This is truly a near mint instrument and a unique one-off 4001.
The original hardshell case is included, along with the Rickenbacker polish cloth and a simple statement from Chris Hillman signed and dated 5/22/90 stating his ownership of this bass.
