With the MA-300, Mojave has taken the stellar MA-200, and added a remote-controlled, continuously variable pickup pattern selector, 15dB pad and a switchable bass roll-off. With both the MA-200 and MA-300 models, David Royer has really created a microphone that, while borrowing from characteristics of classics that can demand many times the price point, has unique sound in its own right that will compliment any studio owner’s arsenal. Each MA-200 is built with a hand-selected 3-micron capsule, high-quality Jensen audio transformer and a military-grade JAN 5840 vacuum tube. The result is mic that is very present, without the spiky harshness or grittiness of other mics in its range, and a unique bottom end that is both powerful and smooth. Try this on an acoustic guitar, and you may be pleasantly surprised with the results. Of course MA-200 can be used on a wide range of instruments that benefit from its warmth and clarity, and it can especially compliment a male voice. While the benefits of a 15db pad and bass roll off are obvious, one may not realize the benefits of continuously variable pickup pattern selector. From the power supply, you can go from an omni-directional response, to cardioid, to hyper-cardioid, to figure-8, and anywhere in between. We loved experimenting with this unique option, because depending on your sound source/room acoustics, the different polar responses can deliver different results. You not only hear room reflections in varying amounts and ways, the response of the sound source itself is subtly transformed as you turn the dial between patterns.
