Romanian violin, Michael Todd violin, student violin, violin for entry level quartet play A very good violin for the advancing student
This is the Michael Todd II, purchased by me from Stringworks in 2005. It was made in Romania for the export market from aged European woods with quality ebony fittings. This particular model was created for the advancing student's participation in the beginning ensemble repertoire (Haydn & Mozart). It has a full, refined and open tone, with good response and resonance. It has good sustain and a pleasing timbre in the middle between dark and bright, making it sympathetic to pleasing sounding double stops. Stringworks offers eight levels of violins, ranging from $400 - $3,000. This model is the next one from the top, now designated the Michael Todd III and is currently priced at $2,200. This instrument has served me well for a number of years until I was able to afford vintage (and more costly) fiddles. Here you can save over a thousand dollars and acquire a good sounding and handsome looking violin that will suit an advancing student. And, I offer a two week, money back trial period so that you can be assured you made a sound musical investment for yourself or your child.
The softly patinated spirit varnish was tastfully applied. The table is very finely grained spruce from the largely untapped Carpathian forests of Eastern Europe. The two piece bookmatched back and ribs are made from well figured maple. The Wittner tailpiece has all four fine tuners built in for precise adjustment.
The volutes are smoothly and deeply carved and the Hill style, heart-shaped pegs turn easily
A proper set-up with good bridge height means optimum volume and ease of play.
SOUND & PLAYABILITY
A thoroughly enjoyable fiddle, fit for an advancing student. It has the means to explore shadings and nuances and execute double stops with a good degree of sympathy. The playability is what one would expect from a properly set up instrument. This violin is both visually and aurally more than suited for entry level chamber play. It is currently strung with a mix of older medium gage Evah Pirazzi and Obligatos by Pirastro. The Thomastic Dominant is also a fine choice of string for this instrument.
MEASURMENTS
body: 14 1/8" (359 mm.) ----- upper bout: 6 1/2" (165 mm.) -----waist: 4 1/2" (114 mm.) lower bout: 8" (203 mm.) ----- rib height: ~ 1 1/4" (31 to 32 mm.)
(Ab.L) -- a close up look at the delicate working of the corners. (Ab.R) shows the Wittner tailpiece with built-in fine tuners. I can't say enough about the value of fine tuners -- especially for students whose intonation depends on and starts with the proper sound of all four open strings.
The finish is mostly in its original condition, the exception being the beard andgarment wear to the lowest areas of the table ane back.
An excellent quality lined hard shell case is included.
