The Yamaha SA-1200S Solid Spruce Top Electric Guitar was part of the ‘Super Axe’ series, and was produced only from 1979–1983. Guitars made in Japan at this time are highly sought after due to the excellent materials and craftsmanship that went into them. Also there were only 800 made. This one is a beauty. It is distinctive because the top is solid spruce, not laminated maple. It is all original with a beautiful quarter-sawn mahogany neck and some say sycamore body but it looks very maple like to me. There are a few issues, but nothing serious. One of the Tone label caps on the knobs has gone (another - volume this time - is in the case), A cap on the back of one of the tuners is missing, there is some rust on the bridge pickup around the poles and some wear to the finish on the bridge. Nothing that affects the performance or sound. This guitar overall is in excellent condition for a 36 year-old instrument. Very little fret wear and NO buckle rash or dings. The sound is sublime. The alnico pickups are the same as in the Yamaha SG2000 so it sustains like nothing I’ve heard before on a semi-acoustic. The push/pull splits coils give Strat/Tele sounds and when the volume is dialled back warm jazz tones are easily achieved. The cutaways give better access than the ES335s and copies for those with big hands (me) and the solid spruce gives a sound and resonance that is the industry standard in high quality jazz guitars. It comes in the original quality hard case. It is priced correctly in my view at $2400 ONO and checking on Harmony Central reviews it gets a 5/5 every time.Available to try in Sydney or Katoomba.
