Up for a no reserve auction is a very RARE and really exceptional example of a checker bound Stomberg Voisenet Kay Kraft Venetian FLAT TOP acoustic guitar. Due to it being the superior 12 fret version, I am thinking late 20s, as opposed to 30s when they went to a 14 fret neck, and ruined the sound of them!!!!. Do not confuse this with the super budget versions you see, or the way more common archtop versions, these never come up for sale. I am pretty sure this was the top of the line in the flat top version, having checker binding (everywhere) and a natural finished Adirondack Red spruce top, as was only used on the Style C archtop versions. Anyway, this guitar is absolutely the finest example of one of these I have ever come across or seen in pics. It is not without some flaws, but nothing too bad. The worst and what probably saved this guitar from being used much, and falling apart (as these lightly built guitars do!!)was the original bridge split in half very bad eons ago, so it sat stored for ages with no string tension. There was absolutely no damage to the guitars top (see pics of the bridge removed and with the original bridge and new bridge prior to installation). Instead of trying to save the brittle original bridge which was made from black dyed maple I think, was to carve a new one out of 50-60 year old ebony. When doing this, I made some improvements to the original design, one being made from a superior wood, another one was a much more substantial bone saddle (instead of the thin plastic original), and the last is that it is now compensated, (stock was a straight slot) which makes for superior intonation (near perfect now!). The original finish and binding are superb on the guitar, and the top of the body is perfectly flat. There are 3 hairlines in the body. none have any movement and are all very minor and I only addressed one of them, a tiny one that was coming off the end of the fingerboard under the high E string, which I sealed and cleated. It was perfectly aligned, but I did not want it pulling or anything with string tension, it is perfect now. The other one on the top is about 3/4" long at the bass side point, it is totally stable, and was most likely caused from the support on the inside of the body not shrinking at the same rate as the top. The other one is a 2 1/2"-3" hairline on the back coming off the butt end of the body, again, no movement and I left it be, there are pics of all of these. The original neck set is perfect on this!!! The chunky V neck, which I am guessing is maple as it has some nice flame/figure especially in the headstock, is actually pretty straight (second best I have ever seen on one of these, the best being a mint style C I had a few months back), but not perfect. There is a slight hump on the bass side around the 3rd to 7th frets, the treble side is actually almost dead nuts straight. I was able to deal with it with a good fret level, as the frets were like new and were quite tall, and they still have plenty of meat on them, but now the guitar plays wonderful with low action, and no fret buzz anywhere on the fingerboard. The fingerboard has a little bit of shrinkage between the 5th and 12th frets on the bass side, but it affects nothing. Usually these guitars need or have had a TON of work to get them in good playing condition, but this guitar only needed a few minor things! These rarely come up for sale, and I cant remember the last time I even saw one for sale! Pretty much as rare as the style C archtops! The guitar comes shipped in its pretty nice original case, along with the original bridge. Dont let this pass you by if you are in the market for one, as it may be years until another one comes available, and most likely will not even be in close to the same condition as this one!
