This could be a collectible instrument. My wife purchased this mountain lap dulcimer from it's maker, Joe Thrift in 1975 at the Galax Fiddler’s Convention in southwest Virginia. I recently contacted Mr Thrift to find out about his work since he is now a well respected violin maker. Here is an excerpt from his email to me:"Glad to hear from you. Love seeing the photos of my dulcimer. It looks great. I made that one while working as an apprentice at Sturgill Guitars. I was already making when I started there. I only made 8 or so dulcimers and then got interested in guitars. Never made a guitar but became interested in violin making while working there. Violin making stuck." You can google Joseph Thrift from Mt Airy, NC.This instrument is crafted from black walnut (some rare "bird's eye" figure on the back) with a traditional spruce top and the sound is simply beautiful! A sweet resonant sustain and very clear notes. We are touring artists and simply do not play this instrument enough to warrant keeping it, and it deserves to have someone making music with it.In order to make this the best instrument possible, I had a new bridge made by Tad Wright Woodworks to improve the intonation. Tad Wright is also a well respected dulcimer maker. The original bridge will be included with the sale, along with an electronic tuner. I do not have a case for this instrument. I will insure the package at my expense.
