The First Hawaiian Conservatory of Music was a marketing tool of the Oscar Schmidt Company. It started around 1919 and continued until the late 1930’s. They would sell a 12-month of correspondence guitar lessons. A year’s course was $30 in installments ($25 a one-time price) and covered 52 weekly lessons by mail. A free Hawaiian guitar – “Valued at $15.00” – was included. These FHCM guitars were, of course, made by Oscar Schmidt--they were solid birch and dyed red. They were, in fact, identical to the Stella brandNOTE the rather rare, very cool mustache bridge. All original apart from the saddle -which was replaced with a bone one and moved back slightly for intonation's sake. This guitar sounds really great … with excellent balance from treble to bass. The neck angle is perfect although the rounded neck has never been re-set. Action is low with 3/32” at the twelfth fret, a full 1/2" at the bridge. The original wooden nut is loose.Ah, but the TONE--the all-birch body produces a warm, rich, deep tone that is quite wonderful. Plays great all up & down.Comes with a chipboard case that this a bit large but usable and good for shipping safely. SHIPPING: I use Shyp—a bit pricey but they pick up and I, as the song doesn’t go, can’t get around much anymore.
