Description

1918 Gibson A Style Mandolin (USA) with original hardshell wooden case (nicely replaced leather handle and some other minor repairs, but fully functional). The original paper label shows this mandolin to be 1918 vintage with serial number 31###. Orville Gibson was alive when this 1918 Gibson A Style Mandolin was built! A vintage beauty! Spruce "Pumpkin" top with stained maple back and sides. Mahogany neck with ebony fretboard and 6 mother of pearl inlays,. "The Gibson" Floral design tailpiece cover. Elevated tortoise shell pickguard with slide clamp engraved "July 4, 1911". Original open gear tuners with ivoroid buttons. Long ago someone mounted a guitar bridge pin at the top of the headstock to hold one end of a strap. Some very light scratches on the body and back of neck and some crazing to the finish, but the finish is in amazingly good condition for a nearly 100 year  old instrument. Crazing in the finish looks like there could be a crack here or there in the wood, but upon close inspection I can find no wood cracks anywhere.  There is some visible wear on the frets, but still a lot left.  Everything looks original to me.  Amazing condition for an instrument that is 100 years old! Sounds amazing as well!  The case has a wooden frame and is covered with black fabric with a leather-look texture and all the latches and hinges function. The interior of the case has faded purple flannel lining. Shipping will be a flat $40 to anywhere in the contiguous 48 states with actual cost charged elsewhere.  The mandolin will be shipped fully insured with strings loosened and in a sturdy cargo, fully insure.  Please ask any questions you have before bidding.  Thanks for reading the entire description.
