A VERY VERY RARE UZBEKI WEDDING TAR, A GREAT EXAMPLE OF SOVIET ERA UZBEKI MUSIC CULTURE.THIS WAS BOUGHT IN THE TASHKENT AREA FROM AN ITINERANT MUSICIAN WHO TRAVELED FROM VILLAGE TO VILLAGE PLAYING AT WEDDINGS AS HIS PROFESSION. WEDDINGS ARE A MAJOR SOCIAL EVENT FOR TRADITIONAL UZBEKI CULTURE. THEY CAN BE QUITE LARGE AND LAST UP TO TWO TO THREE DAYS. MUSIC IS A BIG PART OF THESE EVENTS AND THE MUSICIANS CAN PLAY UP TO 12 HOURS A DAY PROVIDING ALL TYPES OF MUSIC.THIS TAR WAS BUILD WITH A LARGER THAN USUAL BODY MADE OUT OF APRICOT AND CHERRY WOOD. IT PRODUCES A VERY LOUD AND WOOLY SOUND COMPARED TO CLASSIC TARS.
AFTER FORTY-SIX YEARS ON THE ROAD IN VERY ROUGH CONDITION THIS TAR HAS DEVELOPED IT OWN TRUE CHARACTER.
THERE ARE A FEW REPAIRED CRACKS IN THE BOWL WHICH IS NORMAL FOR TARS FROM THIS REGION. THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THE SOUND, PLAYABILITY OR VALUE. THE NECK IS HARD AND TRUE AND THE ACTION IS VERY LOW AND COMFORTABLE. THERE IS SOME GREAT FOLK SADAF WORK WITH SURPRIZING GOOD QUALITY SHELL INLAY BASED OFF OF QAJAR PERIOD PERSIAN MINATURE WORK ON THE NECK. I PUT ON A NEW SET OF PARDEH AND A NEW SKIN SO IT IS READY TO GO. AN INSTRUMENT LIKE THIS HAS A STRONG VALUE IN TODAY ETHNOGRAPHIC ARTIFACTS MARKETS.
AFTER 30 YEARS OF TRAVELING AND COLLECTING, IT IS RARE TO FIND A PIECE LIKE THIS IN SUCH GOOD CONDITION.
