Up for auction is an original 1958 Fender Tweed Pro amp. Serial number S02230 dates to 1958. Combo amp with single 15 inch. The 5E5-A Tweed Pro model spanned the years 1955 to late 1959. There were 2 power transformers used, depending on the year. The later 5E5-A's have a Triad 8087 power transformer. The same model used in the 5F6-A Bassman. This gives a higher plate voltage and more output power than the earlier one's with the 6516 model PT. This 1958 example does have the Triad 8087 Power Transformer. The schematic shows 385 volts, but with modern wall voltage and an 8087 PT it is gives 430 - 435 plate volts (B+). There is an interesting thread on the Fender forum about the 5E5-A, including discussions of the different transformers. (From 2008. You will have to copy and paste). There was also 2 different output transformer models. The later 5E5-A's have the 45217 model output and the earlier one's have the Triad 1846. This 1958 model has the 45217 transformer. (Adding transformer pics later today). The Transformers are original and correct. The transformers and chassis are clean for a 58 year old amp and this one really sounds killer! The original cabinet was cut down to make a head and bottom (poorly). So, I had a custom cabinet manufactured for it. The cabinet is very nice, aged, and lacquered. Completely accurate with finger jointed pine, and even stained internally like Fender did. This is not a Mojo production cabinet like everyone is using today. It was custom built. This amp has all of it's original transformers, and amazingly is still working well with it's original yellow Astron coupling capacitors. (You amp heads know these capacitors do have a unique tone signature). This is a really great sounding Pro. 3 prong power cord has been added, so the polarity switch is defeated. It has a nice set of vintage tubes in it. (Note that the tubes pictured are no longer in it). Those 6L6GA's can't handle the higher voltage of the 8087 transformer. I will change the power tubes and get new pics). I have chosen to install matched power tubes that are correctly biased using the original fixed bias circuitry. These are easy to add a bias adjustment to, but I chose to keep that original. The power supply cap job has been done using the preferred Sprague atom caps, and the other electrolytics replaced as well, with Sprague Atoms. It is ready for another 50 years!
