Up for sale, a 1957 National Glenwood Deluxe model 1105 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. The top of the line model offered by the Chicago based Valco company under their flagship brand National, the Glenwood Deluxe was clearly chasing the emerging Les Paul solidbody market in its heyday! Similar to National's Town & Country model of the era but boasting gold hardware and National's pearloid block and intersecting abalone diamond inlays, the Glenwood Deluxe is truly an elegant instrument, and one of the rarest guitars National ever produced. This instrument balances well on a strap and weighs in at 9lbs.Tonally, the Glenwood has plenty to offer, with two of Valco's humbucker sized single coils with large ceramic magnets for a tone that has plenty of power and punch. The top end is glassy and clear, with a crisp attack and a unique midrange character that few other pickups possess. Valco was somewhat obsessed with having preset Volume and Tone controls on their high end models for each pickup position, and this Glenwood is no exception in that not only do the bridge/neck pickups have their own sets of knobs, but when both pickups are selected together, there's a third Volume/Tone set to govern that setting. This allows for the crafting of three very unique and targeted tones, from snappy twang to thick, meaty textures with the neck pickup selected (perfect for thickening up even the most buzzsaw of fuzz pedals). Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung with fresh 10-46 strings, this National has comfortable, low action and an undeniably cool look. The neck features a prominent V shaped profile with enough chunk and roundness in the shoulders to feel very comfortable and substantial. The profile gets even deeper in the higher registers of the fretboard, achieving "baseball bat" status. It's a profile that is surprisingly fast and manageable even for smaller hands despite its girth, and the substance of the neck undeniably adds to the sustain and richness of the tones this guitar achieves. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the original slender fretwire which plays very well up the neck and shows virtually no wear, having been recently leveled and crowned. The pearloid and abalone inlays are particularly striking, with a geometric Art Deco appeal. The scale length measures 24 3/4" and the original bone nut is 1 11/16" in width. The headstock sports a sleek "stinger" on the black nitro lacquer back, along with a set of modern Kluson gold waffleback tuners which perfectly match the footprint (and style) of the original tuners and have been lightly aged to match the patina of the original gold hardware on the body. These tuners have an extremely smooth and reliable gear ratio, and the waffleback gear housings are identical to those used on a Les Paul Custom of the era. The National name and shield are inlayed in pearl into the polished rosewood veneer on the face of the headstock. All of the electronics work as they should, with original paper in oil tone caps and untouched solder joints. The stock hardware includes the two tier black pickguard, black paddle rotary pickup selector switch, six original Dakaware Volume/Tone knobs, cream pickup surrounds and the original gold trapeze tailpiece. The bolt-on neck is ideally angled as well for ideal pickup height, as the tall cream pickup rings keep the height of the single coils otherwise fixed. The floating rosewood bridge with "lightning bolt" saddle is a custom made factory-spec replacement, carved to intonate properly with a plain G string, and fitted with extra long height adjustment screws, given that the Glenwood requires more height between the saddle and bridge base than most National models.Cosmetically, this guitar is remarkably clean, with a natural finish that shows some ambering of the clear coat and light horizontal finish checking, particularly across the lower bout. Virtually all of the thin gold paint has worn off of the knobs and the gold plating on the tailpiece has worn down to the bare, polished nickel. Since the back of the guitar is a thin solid sheet of cream plastic, there are only a few minor scuffs on this durable material. There is also faint wear central to the V neck profile and a few scattered small nicks and dings from honest use, but overall this is a remarkably clean and original Glenwood Deluxe!A modern hardshell case is included. Please check out our shop "Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar" on the web, and feel free to call us directly with any questions at 206.399.8518.Shipping in the continental USA will be $65, fully insured and shipped via FedEx Ground.
