We have rolled out as many dents as is economically feasible; however, there remain a number on the bottom bow near where it joins the first branch, and on the first branch itself. The bottom bow has also been patched, albeit very stylishly, near one end of the reinforcement strip (see photo). It is a three-valve compensating instrument with extra pipework for improved intonation. The instrument is finished in clear lacquer, has two water-keys (main tuning slide and first valve slide) and a lyre box. The case is probably the original and is in useable condition though well worn; a Blessing 12C mouthpiece is included. This would have been manufactured at the same time as the Sovereign, may have been intended for their overseas market; it is a professional instrument, so, although old, would represent an inexpensive way of playing a more advanced model. It was founded by Trevor Austin (father of Paul) who was previously a euphonium player in the Horse Guards (and played on horseback at the Queen’s Coronation). Following long service in the Salvation Army as a player and conductor, his reputation led to requests to supply instruments around the UK and overseas. Rosehill is now led by Trevor’s son Paul, who was awarded a Government contract in 1999, and since that time Rosehill has been a supplier of musical instruments to Her Majesty’s Military bands. We also service and repair brass band and military band instruments at our workshops in Beaconsfield, many of which are then supplied overseas.
