1981 GIBSON HERITAGE SERIES STANDARD 80 ELITE LES PAUL W/OHSC, QUILTED, ORIGINAL SHAW PICKUPS With the exception of a few Kalamazoo-built prototypes or one-offs in circulation, all Heritage 80s were made in the Nashville plant between 1980 and ’82. These have a unique sharp and wide cutaway at the horn, Grover kidney tuners, and an eight-digit serial number with four-digit number beneath it. There does not appear to be any pattern to the second four-digit number – it was used for marketing reasons to distinguish these guitars as limited editions by Bruce Bolen, then head of R&D. They have a unique headstock shape and are generally on the heavy side (this one weighs in at about 9.5 pounds), have the thin binding in cutaway, small black side dot markers, and a Nashville bridge. The backplates for the control cavity and switch are brown (the one for the pickup switch is intact, but cracked. See picture). The Gibson logo on the headstock has a closed “b” and “o” and a dot over the “i.” The necks on these guitars are of medium thickness. While not as close in terms of vintage specifications as the Guitar Trader and Leo’s LP models, they are well regarded guitars by many players and collectors and have excellent fit, finish, tone, and playability. Tim Shaw of Gibson at the time designed reissue PAFs for them which sound very good and have come to be known as “Shaw PAFs” in the collector community. The pickups are one double white and one zebra under the covers. The truss rod covers are inscribed with the model names. This Heritage Series Standard 80 Elite Les Paul has a one-piece neck, ebony fretboard, and a quilted top. Most came in honeyburst as is this one. The truss rod cover is inscribed with “Heritage Series Standard 80 Elite.” Gibson had Tim Shaw to recreate the famous P.A.F pickups, and his determination to recreate an exact copy of the P.A.F pickup drove him into investigating how the coils were spun,, which magnets they used, how many windings etc. Tim Shaw was very meticulous about the design of these pickups, and he managed to produce a very close clone to the original P.A.F pickup. They go by the name of “Shawbuckers” or “TimBuckers” in the collector’s society, and they fetch a fair amount of money when they get sold on various sites and auctions. These pickups are marked with numbers underneath, 137 being the neck pick up with less windings, and 138 being the bridge pickup with more windings. This Gibson Heritage Series Standard 80 Elite Les Paul is a used item in VG+ condition.  This guitar is in real good playing condition with no major issues found. It has been under a bed for many years and only pulled out on the rare occasion to play. No major scratches, dings or marks. There is a couple of light surface dings (no breaks in the surface finish) and some mild rash on the back of the body that cannot be pictured as they are light and do not break the finish either, but can be seen as finish indents in spots on the back. The neck is in good shape, straight with some fret wear but plenty of life left in them. Chrome pickup covers show cloudiness. This item has been played and it is a player and delivers the goods. You will receive this item well-packed in its original Gibson case with paperwork but without the original packaging. Please contact this seller for additional information.
