While the SG was initially still called a Les Paul for a few years, the guitar went through several changes in the 60s including the name change to Solid Guitar. This first iteration of the SG custom is perhaps the most iconic SG next to Angus Young’s. This guitar was the claim to fame for Les Paul’s wife, Mary Ford.The Case…This guitar comes with its original Gibson case. The case is in pretty good shape for its age with just average wear and tear. The tolex is attached to the case and the latches work. The velvet-like, pink interior really complements the guitar well.The Guitar!This is a player’s vintage guitar. It is loaded with toneful 500k pots and 3 - ’57 Classic pickups from 2010 and a Vintage style Lyre / Walrus Tooth Vibrola was added to the guitar. The bridge is an early 70s Gibson patent number bridge which is worth quite a bit itself. A Les Paul Custom Truss rod and tenon cover was also added. New gold strap buttons similar to modern day Gibson were also put on. All of these changes made this guitar go from Classy to ULTRA CLASSY. If you don’t like the vibrola, it is possible to remove it as the stop bar tailpiece studs are still in the guitar, however, you will have 6 small holes on the front of your guitar. If you modify the vibrola and some how unweld the arm bar part, you could get the stop tail piece back in and keep the cool Gibson badge similar to a Derek Trucks SGThis guitar has finish checking all over. There is finish checking on the back of the headstock, back of the neck, back and front of the guitar… everywhere! This is not a relic job, just honest finish checking. Please view the video tour. This guitar is free from breaks, cracks or repairs despite this checking.The headstock is clean with lots of small string change scratches. The frets are in good shape with mild fretware. The ebony board was just oiled and looks fantastic in contrast to the white finish. You can the typical lines around where the nut was mounted (common on white guitars) as well as the lines running up and down where the fretboard was joined to the neck (also part of white guitar ownership.)The front of the guitar shows picking scratches and some light dings - most notably by the neck pickup and by the input jack. The gold hardware is in good shape with minimal tarnishing, but lots of finger prints. There are a few dings along the edge of the guitar as well.The back of the headstock has a small finish chip by the serial number and a ding by the D string tuner. The back of the neck has two areas where the finish was dinged away, but while playing the guitar we were not able to feel them. There was a strap that slept with this guitar in the case against the back of the neck that caused a dotting black pattern on the back of the neck if you look closely. The back of the guitar has light buckle ware and shirt scratches with a few finish breaking dings by the control cavity. The control plate is missing one screw due to stripped wood as is the vibrola unit (in case, but stripped)Conclusion While this might not be a mint condition, all original example of the 80s reissue of the early 60s SG custom, this player’s grade example is way better than the 2000s reissue. It has better electronics than them and it has more aged wood with a cool vintage flair to it. Don’t wait too long, this is one sweet baby that won’t last long.
