Up for sale, a 2008 Fender American Vintage series Jazzmaster in exceptional condition, crafted as a tribute to the famous blue sparkle Surfburst! While this guitar began its life as a standard '62 American Vintage reissue Jazzmaster with a traditional sunburst finish, it was subsequently custom finished in jaw-dropping blue sparkle burst, complete with an anodized gold pickguard courtesy of Tone-Guard, and a Pat. Pending genuine vintage Fender vibrato unit, only used on the earliest Jazzmasters from 1958-60. The result is a fitting tribute to the original "Surfburst," and this guitar specifically commemorates the first blue sparkle Jazzmaster made in '58, although the term would later become synonymous with Dick Dale and his band the Deltones, who all received custom blue sparkle finishes for their Fenders. This finish was applied by Paul Rhoney, a builder known for his exceptional Fender inspired instruments and pioneering electric guitar design. Tonally, this Jazzmaster delivers everything you want in a surf guitar and beyond, with stock wiring and a pair of original Fender USA reissue Jazzmaster pickups, with strong output, glassy top end and full, balanced bass response. This guitar can twang and cut with the best, and the anodized guard is surprisingly impactful on the tone of the instrument, both providing superior shielding for the electronics and adding a notable zing to the top end response. Of course this guitar has plenty to offer in thick low end as well, and on the Rhythm Circuit (on the guitar's bass side horn), a darker set of tonalities provides the perfect bedrock for Jazz voicings or for thickening up the tone of your favorite fuzz pedal. This Jazzmaster weighs in at 8lbs 14oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar where we specialize in Offset Fender guitars! The maple neck has a medium C profile, with a smooth gloss nitro lacquer finish, fairly slight shoulders and a fast, easy playing feel. The maple has some light flame figuring in the wood, and the slab rosewood fretboard has a dark, rich grain pattern. The neck has a very intuitive feel with traditional Fender specs such as a 1 5/8" nut width, 7 1/4" fretboard radius, and slender vintage-style fretwire. The frets are virtually mint, with well rounded crowns and no wear. On the headstock, the original Fender Jazzmaster waterslide decal is present, along with the Kluson-style Gotoh tuning machines. All of the electronics work as they should and the chrome hardware is in fantastic shape, including the original Patent Pending vibrato tailpiece. The smooth and extremely responsive action of this vintage vibrato unit is key to the Jazzmaster feel and is perfect for warbles, flutters, and fairly deep dives, jumping back to the original pitch with ease. This vibrato unit alone can easily set you back $300, and its inclusion on this Jazzmaster adds a great touch of authenticity to this Surfburst tribute. The finish has a deep metalflake sparkle, with a smooth transition from a limed shade of yellow to a deep blue at the edges of the body. There are a few small spots deep in the blue of the burst where the metalflake concentrated a bit more or less, but even these extremely faint inconsistencies don't take away from a spectacular looking instrument, professionally finished by Rhoney Guitars. Cosmetically, there's virtually no wear on the instrument, as this finish was applied very recently, and the original nitro lacquer on the neck (the neck retains the stock Fender factory finish) shows no particular wear either.Short of the Paul Waller Fender Masterbuilt iteration of the Surfburst (or the real thing for a cool 50k), this is just about the only tribute instrument made to commemorate this iconic guitar! The playability, tone, eye-popping sparkle finish, and vintage Fender vibrato unit all add up to an instrument that's worth far more than the sum of its parts! The original brown Fender G&G hardshell case is included, along with the original Fender paperwork.
