The vocal horn also called a ballad horn is pitch in C and was made by Rudall Rose Carte Co in the 1860's. This instrument would have been used to play vocal parts in place of a singer. The instrument is played with a standard French horn mouthpiece and is at A440. The valve system is called Finger-slide valves, invented in 1862 by Samson who sold the patent to Rudall Rose Carte Co. On line I found a web site for this company and it stated that the earlist known instrument is number 753, this horn is number 766.The bell reads: Prize Medal, 1862, Rudall Rose Carte & C0 20 Charing Cross London No 766. This company operated from 1852 to 1871. Each valve has 3 main parts, the valve button and stem is spring loaded, has a connector (or finger) on the side that is connect to the actual valve the next tube that handles the wind path. It comes with a hand made leather case that appears to have been made in the last 30 years. From the collection of The Brass Players Museum - Springfield MA Please keep in mind that I am not a French horn player To see other instruments I have for sale please search on seller name of tbn
