Up for auction is an original ZUCKERMANN single keyboard harpsichord, Stage II. This is a complete kit made from the very best materials needed to build a fine reproduction of a manual single Flemish Harpsichord. Flemish builders were not hesitant about using a more robust construction than that previously used in traditional light Italian instruments. The results of their innovations became the most widely emulated approach to harpsichord building in the classical era.
Zuckermann has been building harpsichord kits since the 1960’s and is world renowned for wonderful quality, sound and mechanics of the instrument. The Zuckermann kits represent more than 50 years of research. The Zuckermann company still thrives today in Stonington, CT and actively supports builders with parts, advice, and sometimes a “pep talk” for the builder.
This kit is new in the box, never assembled or used in any way. It has been stored indoors always in a climate controlled room, carefully packed waiting for a craftsman-musician to embark on a great journey of “building a piano.” I paid $4,430 for this kit in April of 1998. Yes – it’s almost 19 years new.
I bought it thinking I had the time and energy to build this wonderful instrument but my plans changed, and it never happened. Sadly, I am selling it hopefully to someone who will assemble it, play it and admire it as beautiful furniture with purpose. I built a very similar instrument with a music professor in 1982, and it was actually quite easy to assemble. If a 20-year old college student can do it, most others can also. All pieces are pre-cut from knot-free poplar, and the all-important spruce sound board is intact. Note that there is no warping of any surfaces as shown in the pictures. The boxes contain a complete kit, everything you need except paint and a bench. I always thought it would be cool to build my own bench AFTER the harpsichord was complete. There are detailed instructions on painting (surface prep / type of paint needed. Most Flemish harpsichords were painted, sometimes with exotic murals on the lid, but if you like stain that is easy to apply also.
I will build a custom wood crate for the auction winner and ship directly to your door for a flat $250 or you can pick it up near Orlando FL. Shipping will be, insured for the value you paid. So bidders, get your spoke shave and 1/16” drill bits ready! This will be a great project for you.
If the harpsichord does not sell for my very fair asking price, I am going to give it to the music department of a local college.
