World renowned Tiffany & Company (known colloquially as Tiffany or Tiffany's) is an American luxury jewelry and specialty retailer, headquartered in New York City. Tiffany is renowned for its luxury goods and is an arbiter of taste and style and was once a purveyor to the Russian imperial family. Tiffany's was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in Brooklyn, Connecticut in 1837 as a "stationery and fancy goods store. Unlike other stores at the time in the 1830s, Tiffany clearly marked the prices on its goods to forestall any haggling over prices. In addition, against the social norm at the time, Tiffany only accepted cash payments In 1878, Tiffany won the gold medal for jewelry and a grand prize for silverware at the Paris Exposition, which gave the Tiffany brand name added prestige. In 1887, Tiffany bought the French Crown Jewels, which attracted publicity and further solidified the Tiffany brand's association with high-quality diamonds. In 1919, the company made a revision to the Medal of Honor on behalf of the United States Department of the Navy. This "Tiffany Cross" version was rare because it was awarded only for combat, using the previous design for non-combat awards. In 1942 the Navy established the Tiffany version for non-combat heroism, but in August 1942 the Navy eliminated the Tiffany Cross and the two-medal system. In 1956, legendary designer Jean Schlumberger joined Tiffany, and Andy Warhol collaborated with Tiffany to create Tiffany Holiday Cards (circa 1956-1962). In 1968 Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady of the U.S. at the time, commissioned Tiffany to design The White House china-service. Tiffany's continues to maintain its image as a luxury goods company, high-style expensive items remain on display in Tiffany stores in New York & worldwide. Hohner Musikinstrumente GmbH & Co. KG is a German company specialising in the manufacture of musical instruments. Founded in 1857 by Matthias Hohner (1833–1902), Hohner is identified especially with harmonicas and accordions. The Hohner company has invented and produced many different styles, and most of the harmonicas used by professionals. Matthias Hohner, who was originally a clockmaker, started making harmonicas (by hand) in 1857 with his wife and a single employee. 650 were made in the first year. Hohner harmonicas quickly became popular, and during Matthias' lifetime he built the largest harmonica factory in the world. During the American Civil War Matthias Hohner gave harmonicas to family members in the United States who in turn gave them to the fighting soldiers. Matthias Karl Hohner was one of the last members of the Hohner dynasty involved in managing the family business between 1968 and 1986. His son Matthias Francisco Hohner belonged to the first generation of direct descedents who did not enter into the family business. Many direct descedents of the founder are still active as members of the "Deutsches Harmonika Museum" and the "Hohnerschefamilienverein". Most early blues harmonica players throughout the 20th century have been known for using Hohner Marine Band harmonicas because they were the most available at the time and to the present day Hohner harmonicas are instruments of choice for reputable musicians.
