As the first truly integrated digital audio production platform, ProTools has garnished support from many third party developers and has become the disk based recording system of choice for all major studios. Pro Tools III provides automated mixing and effects processing in addition to recording and editing. The standard ProTools system is comprised of a Macintosh Quadra 650 or higher system, ProTools software, a disk I/O card providing connections for a SCSI HD and eight channel audio interface, a DSP farm card for processing audio, and an eight channel audio interface. Multiple DSP farm cards can be added for as much processing horsepower is needed. I use the standard 882 audio interface, which provides eight channels of balanced analog (+4 or -10) inputs and outputs, along with stereo SPDIF digital I/O. ProTools software 3.2 provides numerous features for editing and automated mixing, allowing internal mixdown of tracks in the digital domain. Using ProTools opens up a whole new method of recording, allowing the user or musician to select the best takes of each track, edit out imperfections, and make audio "collages". On mixdown audio levels can be automated and tracks processed via audio plug-ins such as delay, compression, reverb, and many new esoteric plug-ins now available via third parties."... N.B. What's great about to this system: - Pro tools: needless to add anything to the article copied just above, which by the way talks about ProTools software 3.2, ProTools III version 5.0.1 was the 1st of modern digital music recording system with a lot of features and outstanding DSP capability that laid the foundations for one of the best industry standard music production system still used today. - Mastering: although this is an old system, you may find it sounds better than a lot of newer ones out there!!! The plug-ins packages included today cost in the range of £500 to £1200 per package and there are at least 5 plug-in packages in here!!! This makes it a very respectable production system with great sound and excellent mastering tools. LIMITS to this system: - Compatibilty: it won't work with any later machine. PowerMac G3 (Beige) is the most powerful machine this system could be hosted and would work with. - Connectivity: NO USB port connectivity. There could be a way to add this connectivity via the SCSI printer port, though I'm not 100% certain this can be done. The only other way to copy a file from this system to any other devices would be through the Ethernet Network Port connection, which is how we used to do it whenever we were transferring master tracks to other devices to burn them on CD.
