Make: GibsonModel: SG SpecialColor: CherryCondition: Good - very goodWeight on my scale: about 7 poundsCase: Non-Original, Generic HardshellThis is an original 1967 Gibson SG Special – THIS IS THE SAME VERSION OF THE SG THAT PETE TOWNSHEND PLAYED THROUGHOUT THE LATE 60’S AND EARLY 70’S, WHICH HAS BEEN REISSUED BY GIBSON. I am not sure how many of these were originally made, but Townshend destroyed many of them, so it seems safe to say that these are much rarer than they might have been….PLEASE READ THIS DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY; THERE IS A LOT OF DETAIL ABOUT THIS GUITAR, AND WHY YOU CAN GET THIS GENUINE 1967 SG SPECIAL FOR BASICALLY THE SAME PRICE AS A REISSUE AND HALF OR LESS OF WHAT A REAL ONE IN PERFECT CONDITION WOULD BE:I have owned this guitar for about 10 years, and am thinning the herd in my studio. It has been used extensively in my studio for recording projects, but I have several guitars with P-90’s so this one needs to move on to someone who will put it to more use! When I got this guitar, it had been modified quite a bit. From head to tail: the tuners were changed to Schallers, the truss-rod cover was an old genuine Gibson one, but from an L-5 (it said “Custom” vertically – it is shown in one or two of the pictures, but please note that it is NOT included in this auction), it had old (like 70’s) DiMarzio humbuckers, the original pickguard had been cut for the humbuckers, the tremolo tailpiece was missing, the strap buttons had been replaced, and a small toggle switch had been added as a coil-tap for one of the pickups. There was also some cracking around the input jack where it looked like a straight cable had been plugged in and knocked (not uncommon on these – this is why I always try to use right-angle plugs on these NOTE – IT WAS CRACKED BUT NOT BROKEN OUT).The electronics (pots, switch, jack and caps) appear to my eye to all be original to this guitar; I am attaching really clear pictures so you can see and decide for yourself, but it is clear that all the pots are date-coded “1376626,” meaning manufactured by CTS (Chicago Telephone Supply) the 26th week of 1966.I searched and found as many original parts as I could find, to try to get this guitar as close to original as possible. I managed to locate an original intact pickguard, original pickup covers, original 3-on-a-plate Kluson tuners, and an original vibrato tailpiece (though without the arm, so this arm is an AllParts replacement).I put in a pair of P-90s made for me by Willie Houston of Rocket Pickups in Seattle. I have his pickups in many of my guitars, and love them! As I mentioned, they are under original covers.I also replaced the truss-rod cover with one that is closer to original – it is a real 70’s or 80’s one marked “SG.”The tuning keys are, as I mentioned, original Klusons, but they have been installed with oversize “conversion” bushings because the holes have been enlarged to accommodate the Schallers that were on it when I got it. Also note that the tuners that were originally on this guitar were not Klusons, but were a type that Gibson used in 1967 on some instruments that looked more like cheap classical tuners, with metal buttons. You can see the outline in one of the pictures from the plate on which the original tuners were mounted. I got Klusons because they were also correct for 1967, they are better-looking, they work better, and they are easier to find. So, to recap, the only parts that are not correct original parts are the tuner bushings, the truss-rod cover, the pickups, the strap buttons (Schaller-type straplocks), and the vibrato arm; everything else is correct. NOTE that the bridge that is presently on it is an AllParts replacement compensated for a plain G string; the original that was on it when I got it is also included in this auction.Structurally, the only issues are the tuner holes have been enlarged and there are a few extra holes from the screws for the Schallers (covered by the plates on the Klusons), There is a filled hole from the micro switch, and repair around the jack. Also, the pickup cavities have been enlarged for the humbuckers – NOTE that there was VERY LITTLE wood removed. I am attaching detailed pictures of this – the cavities were only enlarged about 1/16th of an inch. There have been no other repairs – no broken headstock or anything structural. THE NECK IS STRAIGHT AND THE TRUSS-ROD IS FULLY FUNCTIONAL AND HAS A LOT OF ADJUSTMENT LEFT (see pic). The finish is in good shape; a good bit of honest playing wear most of which is on the back where there was a sticker that I removed to reveal a fair amount of buckle rash. No need to relic; it’s already been done for you naturally! If you are looking for a great Townshend-spec SG special, this one will allow you to play a REAL one without having to worry about it, for less than half of the $5,000-6,000 price tag that really clean real ones get, and for about the same as a used reissue (but without the weird satin finish…).I have tried to give all the detail I can think about for this great guitar, but as always, please feel free to ask questions! The fine print:MUST RECEIVE PAYMENT WITHIN 48 HOURS OF THE AUCTION’S COMPLETION; BUYER PAYS ACTUAL SHIPPING FROM ANCHORAGE, AK VIA EITHER USPS PRIORITY OR USPS EXPRESS MAIL (BUYER’S CHOICE). Please contact me during the auction is you would like a shipping quote for both methods. I only ship via USPS because FedEx and UPS are typically at least twice the price from Alaska. I have shipped many, many guitars using USPS; I pack them VERY well and have never had any issues whatsoever.ITEM IS SOLD AS-IS; please contact me if you want any additional information, I am happy to answer questions and take specific pictures!
