This delightful instrument from the hands of Early Music Pioneer and master restorer Hugh Gough dates from his earliest years in Greenwich Village after re-locating from London. Gough (1916-1997) was a crucial link between Arnold Dolmetsch and the post War Early Music Movement, having studied both period appropriate instrument building and Clavichord from the elder master. It is crafted mostly from well-seasoned fir/cedar and measures 6 5/8” thick x 41” wide x 24” deep and comes with a superlative, hand crafted solid mahogany (dark blackish stained finish) stand 24” tall x 18 5/8” deep x 32 5/8” wide boasting 3 beautifully formed baroque twist legs. It has 32 white keys and 24 black and all of the key covers are intact and tight. The instrument is INTACT and NEEDING TUNING AND MINOR RESTORATION. All of the jacks rise when the keys are depressed. Several of the plectra ride atop the strings…they don’t always rotate properly to slip back under or perhaps stick out a bit too far…I’m not well versed in such things. The tiny, short bit of wood that supports the strings on the left (inside…like a chubby fret) has been nailed back in place instead of glued. I think the strings are in place, but it is dreadfully out of tune and I am uncertain if any will need to be replaced. It comes with an original wrought iron “T” handle key for tuning that looks 18th century it is so well made. The stand is sound and in great shape with only the most minor scuffs…the finish is a dry oil rub…no varnish or lacquer. The case of the Ottavino appears to be raw and unenhanced. There are NO cracks in the wood…soundboard or otherwise. The top cover is scratched and scarred with minor impact dents on the corners.
