This rare and collectible Heckel System Oboe is marked HECKEL BIEBRICH on both joints and bell. Serial number is 3578 which would probably make this antique instrument more than a 100 years old. It is made of Grenadilla and not a stained boxwood or maple as was sometimes the case. No cracks. The keywork appears to be silverplate over German-silver (nickel). Key design is Heckel military style from the late 19th and early 20th Century. It has Automatic Octave; Left F; and both Thumb and Side Bb. Range is to Low B. This system is different from the traditional Loree/Conservatory style but a contemporary oboist should still be able to use after limited practice. Instrument was totally overhauled and restored within the last year. New cork pads on upper joint and all small toneholes and new bladder pads on other keys. New corks have been put on tenons. Mechanism has been tightened and oiled (as has wood). Plays well at A = 440 and comes with 2 reeds. NO CASE
