2016 Fender Custom Shop 1967 Closet Classic Smuggler’s Telecaster. A killer remake of the rare Smuggler’s cavity Tele! An amazing guitar and this one is in fantastic. The Closet Classic is one of my favourite Custom Shop guitars and this one is such a cool and unique guitar! It features what Fender describe as a "smuggler's cavity" which is a hollowed out section of the guitar beneath a transparent pick-guard. This guitar is based on the Original and considerably rare 1967 Smugglers' Fender Tele, which was quite a strange build at the time. Fender recreated the model in very limited numbers. I'm sure by now you'll know that certain vintage Fender guitars can command some quite staggering prices. Indeed, all is not as it first seems, for if you remove the pickguard on this Tele, it's revealed to be a recreated example of a "Smuggler's" Tele, so named because of the cavities in the body below the pickguard, in which - I'm sure you could imagine - it would conceivably be possible to hide contraband. These cavities were intended to reduce weight in the guitar body; personally I've never found Teles particularly heavy and maybe the consensus of opinion was that the production of a slightly lighter than usual Telecaster didn't really warrant the extra machining on the body and so these "Smuggler's" were only produced briefly in 1967. With its special “smuggler’s cavity”—a hollowed-out portion of the body beneath the pickguard, 2016’s Limited Edition 1967 Closet Classic Smuggler’s Telecaster offers an enlightened take on classic ’60s Tele style. With hand-wound 1967 Telecaster pickups and a lightly aged Closet Classic lacquer finish on its ash body, it delivers a phenomenal playing experience. Other premium features include a tinted maple neck with mid-’60s oval “C” profile, round-laminated maple fingerboard with 9.5” radius, 6105 frets and bone nut, three-way switch and modern wiring, three-ply white pickguard (in case) and vintage hardware. A Closet Classic finish is such a popular choice for guitar players that want an aged finish without the guitar looking like it has been beaten and battered!
