Vintage Gates Sta Level for sale - This is one of those holy grail units in great cosmetic condition - one of the cleanest I've seen for a vintage piece- This thing sounds incredible - tone for days, so thick and rich - unreal on vocals and bass. This unit was modded by the folks at Retro to make it even more versatile - they added another attack time and 5 additional release times (killer on drums after the mod).The mods that were added were:A stepped dial for the release times, with the original release time being one of the selections and 5 other release times added as well for more flexibility. The original attack times only had 2 selections, "single" (which is the slowest) and "double" (which is faster than the previous). The new mod for the attack time added a "triple" setting (which is the fastest and the grabbiest of all 3 attack times. Great for drums, etc).The guys at Retro recommended not to drill into the vintage exterior to add the attack time switch mod and instead moved it into the unit itself. The front of the unit folds down on a hinge, even when in the rack, and the switch is right there - It keeps the exterior of the device from being drilled or compromised.
I'm not a tube expert but we tried to find all the best tubes for this unit. The ones that made the most difference in sound where the 6386 and the 6V6 - We tried to get the best and most coveted tubes to make this STA sound the thickest and richest possible. I don't know the exact years of manufacturing or the serial numbers of every single tube but here's what's installed to the best of my knowledge: 6386 - GE NOS OB2 - RCA 12AT7 - GE 6AL5 - GE 6V6 - NOS matched pair RCA 6v6 5y3 - GEI've got an additional 6386 tube I will include as well as the XLR pigtails. This unit kills - hard to let it go as original Gates units are getting harder and harder to find but I've got other things that I need that I would get more use out of.TAGS: UREI, Teletronix, Altec, Universal Audio, Retro, Shadow Hills, Neve, SSL
