Be sure to scroll down the page to view all the photos. The time has come for me to part with another of my treasures. It’s the legendary and extraordinarily rare Shure SM3B. A very few were hand assembled by Sidney Shure and his staff. These mics were designed to compete with the RCA 77-DX but they never went into production. You can learn more at Stan Coutant’s excellent microphone site. Thank you Professor Stan. The only difference between mine and the one pictured on that page is that mine is missing the back plate. You can see it was there at one time but it either fell off or was removed. Other than the one listed on Stan’s site and mine, I’m not aware of any others in existence. When I first acquired the mic, quite some time ago, the ribbon element was suspended by 8 very thin rubber cords (see photo 5). This was not one of Shure’s best ideas. Over the years the cords deteriorated, stretched, sagged, and a couple broke. The element has now been propped up with high density foam rubber on the top, bottom, and sides. This can also be seen in the photos. It has been holding well but you may have a better idea. The mic works well and sounds great. It‘s in excellent cosmetic condition with no blemishes and it comes with the Shure stand shown. This is an opportunity to own an incredibly rare ribbon mic.
