Here is a beautiful G&L ASAT Classic with a few nice upgrades. The Clear Red finish shows off grain that may look like Mahogany but this body is actually Okoume, an African hardwood that G&L now offers as a regular option. With scraped wood binding and the venerable Magnetic Field Design pickups, this guitar looks familiar, but is guaranteed to change the way you think about T-Style guitars.

It's an African hardwood that is fairly lightweight, has a grain similar to mahogany, and is popular as a laminate for decorative woods and structural products. When used on acoustic guitars, it is said to have tonal properties similar to maple. On a solid body however it behaves a bit more like Mahogany. It's got a warmer, richer tone than an Alder or Swamp Ash, but thanks to the MFD pickups that doesn't mean "dull". The Okoume body gently rounds out the high end of the punchy MFD pickups and give more support to the low to midrange bass frequencies. It is quite nice because it still has plenty of bite but it takes a little of the edge off, especially at the bridge. If you've always liked the idea of the Tele neck pickup, but have never found one that you've really liked, then check out the ASAT MFD neck pickup. It's got the classic round, slightly hollow Tele neck tone, but with better clarity, less compression and a stronger attack across the spectrum. Chalk it up to MFD design, which uses a low resistance coil and fairly strong ceramic magnet. Using mild distortion like a Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive or Tube Screamer yields a very musical, slightly crunchy sound with great note definition: The kind of tone you can use practically on any song and, the notes don't get smeared or muddy. Adding more gain creates a creamy/crunch with a lot of texture that is well suited to expressive lead work.G&L's ASAT MFD bridge pickup was Leo Fender's take on improving is classic bridge pickup, which was originally lifted from his pedal steel guitars. It's got all those twangy, chewy vintage flavors packed in there but with more body, output, and fewer sharp edges. Add some gain and this pickup becomes an awesome classic rock machine with surprising rock capabilities. It's truly a great lead pickup; harmonic, crunchy, with great touch sensitivity and and a touch of Okoume-enhance warmth and fatness. The MFD pickups stretch the limits of what you can expect with this type of guitar, without heavily compromising traditional tones. The addition of Okoume adds a tonal twist and back-friendly light weight to an already versatile workhorse. With the quality, tone, fit and finish you expect from G&L, the original solid body electric just got a little more interesting.
