If there ever was a classic in the microphone world, the U47 may be THE ONE. The original Telefunken U47 was created in 1947; the first condenser microphone with switchable polar patterns (cardioid and omnidirectional). It featured the now-famous M7 capsule, VF14 tubes (they were military surplus tubes at the time, and if you can find an original they fetch around $2,000 on the used market), and BV8 output transformers. The combination of these components created an ultra-smooth, musical, large-yet detailed sound that has remained a classic to this day. It was this model’s musical qualities and open top end that converted many U.S. engineers and musicians, who at the time were primarily using darker sounding ribbon mics. In fact Sinatra was so fond of his Telefunken U47 that he insisted on using no other mic after 1950. Telefunken Eletroakustik has recreated this timeless classic with amazing precision. It features a new hand-built M7 capsule and a new BV8 output transformer. It uses a "plug and play" replacement for the rare VF14M tube, called a VF14k.
