This is a vintage (serial number 514951) Holton H-77 "Farkas" Double French Horn. This instrument was the original model of horn developed and designed by Philip Farkas, is in very good condition, and plays very well. The valves move well with good compression and the slides all move of course. The Holton model 77 was built using yellow brass, and later the design was altered to make the horn a bit bigger and the material was changed to nickel silver to make the horn a more direct competitor to the Conn 8D; this new model was the Holton 179. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings throughout the horn, as well as some light, isolated scratching and pitting. The original mouthpipe overpart was damaged and needed to be replaced; it was replaced with a new Holton part. The new part is correct, but it is actually a 179 part, so it is engraved with "179". The engraving on the bell reads “HOLTON/ ELKHORN, WIS./ U.S.A”. The minor imperfections are visible in the pictures, and none of them affect the playability of the horn. This instrument has been professionally cleaned in our shop and repaired to full playability. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now; if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn hardshell case and a mouthpiece in good condition.
How the horn plays:  Full, warm sound. The tone is dark and smooth. The F and Bb side timbres match well once the horn is intonated. The horn has a good dynamic range. The low and high ranges speak well.
